Then there's the Kamikaze ducks,

I could relate a very amusing story about a well documented radio controlled duck, but I cant go into detail its still a state secret how we were going to get the upper hand in the cold war with this innovative device.......

Pass the maggy lamp please!!!

    Hi Brian,

Happy New Year. Hope you're keeping well.

I hadn't thought of that! As I type this I'm looking towards the site of the old bay platform at Havant Station.

    All the best

      Hi Ade
you did say you wanted a dog. I can tell you one thing if a terrier is anything like our 3 jack russels....they will chase your trains given the chance...they cant help them selves little '-uggers'. Our little ones (bless em!!!) chase cars and tractors down the road (our side of the fence I hasten to add), so a nice speeding train at their level would be a dream come true.
Seriously though, a little dog would cause a lot less damage should it run amok. We have a puppy Rottweiler(5 months) since my visit to you, and my new layout to be (when it happens) is above ground level so no problems there........but access for the dog will be granted should some un- welcome night time visitors be found snooping around............should this happen I will post the resulting pictures (I know the lads love pics.....they told me so!!!)
Good luck with what ever dog you get, get them young and train them from day one and you will be OK.
      All the best
      Kev

We've had a Cairn Terrier for four years.

The only trouble I had was on two occasions he decided to chew up some of my lovely expensive Prieser figures (bless).

After the second time I took all of his squeaky toys and stuff, put em in a basket and put them on the table out of his reach but visible (yes sad I know, confiscated his toys).  My missus thought I was barking.  Two days later I let him have his toys back.

He's never touched anything on the railway since

My hens however are another matter altogether. At Wits End

We now have 2 dogs, 1 4yr old malamute x lab, and one husky x collie. If you like your lawn to look green and   not like a mud bath don't get dogs. If you are a dog lover be prepared to loose your lawn. Esp if you get a female their pee kills the grass in summer.

To be honest the dogs are scared of the trains, its the accidental damage thats the problem big clumsy dogs. They are the reason I'm considering giving them the garden and sidelining the railway untill I can get a beger garden where I can have my own little patch.

Still even with the Railway on the verge of demise I'd never be withouit them.

Went over to the dogs trust on Sunday gone, and registered with them.We had a look at the dogs.Very sad to see them really...especially the older ones. There was sad music playing over the speakers too !! Anyhow,i enquired after 2 dogs, but was told one of them,a beagle, was probably too grumpy for a first time owner, and the other dog,a terrier...had bitten 3 prospective owners already the week before. So,its bide  our time.Keeping an eye on their web site, and will go over now and then.Think next time we go,we`ll ask to have a chat with one of the staff, and go through a few things...Then see what they might advise, regarding a dog that may be suitable to us.Most of the dogs when we went were advertised as being suitable for experienced owners. We have been told they will be getting more in soon.It beats me how anyone could ever just dump a dog,out in the country,or anywhere else....and drive off.I do appreciate times are hard, with recession etc etc...But to just dump your pet,is unbelievable, when you could take it to the trust,or a vet...To get help, advice.

Ah well...Fingers crossed for the future.

Meanwhile have a friend from work coming over on Sunnday morning,to see the railway, and he`s bringing his dog.Should be interesting.

              Cheers

                Hi Ade
hope all is well with the dog search. Have you ever considered www.dogsandpuppies.co.uk or www.preloved.com. We looked after 9 puppies last September and had to find homes for them (owner in the USA on holiday), by using these two sites we sold all 9 pups (after vetting the family to be....certainly would not let the dogs go any where even if the dogs were not mine)
You would be amazed at what is available at at some great prices, you donot need to pay over the odds if you look around. If you had a pup at least you know what you are getting (no previous history to worry about) and you can train it to your rules from day one. Even on rescue sites there  are pups available at times.
Our pup (Rottie) is 5 months now, weighs more than the other three Jack Russels put together......and still a lot of growing to do, when she is full grown I may call her....Maam!!!
Hope all is well your neck of the woods,as for me.....still collecting the track, still collecting the track, still collecting the track!!!
                All the best

                  My suggestion?

                  Get a cat instead....

As long as its not a Siamese, they will ambush and disembowel anything that moves..... As pets Cockatoos that have the freedom of the yard are out too, A friend who has one had to take "strong action" as it used to call it's fellow wild companions into his yard and they set about the total destruction of everything, mean while "Charles" the tame cocky would sit on his T and squark encouragement... Bigger dogs may be a better proposition for a few reasons, generally despite their size they are more placid, they are imposing and have a tendency to keep ner'e do wells at bay, and a re generally easier to train, but some breeds pointers, beagles etc just need to sniff and are lazy so are the ideal companion for someone who doesen't want a  frenetic ball of energy racing around the house

My dad has a couple of dogs which killed the grass very quickly. He dug it all up and had astroturf laid professionally, which although expensive, is still perfectly green years later. He was able to recoup some of the cost by selling his lawn mower though

Well Hello Folks again. We have had our dog for 6 weeks now and he`s an absolute joy.Full of energy mind.Have not actually ran a train as yet.Was hoping to try this weekend, but it looks set for rain all the time. He`s a crossbreed...Not really sure what of to be honest.Someone mentioned labrador and beagle..Possibly some jack Russell in there too. He`s very friendly, and has had a lot of running around the railway. The guy from the dogs trust who came to inspect our garden had never seen anything quite like it.I`m surprised we passed the inspection as the garden is hazardous with Rocks,Gorges, etc. He asked if he could walk over my bridges.I had to say yes.Only one partially collapsed, which considering they are all home made,i was pleased about.I told him the dog would weigh less.
Anyhow, managed to get the Dog..Otis walking well now, with the help of a gentle leader nose harness...He originally pulled like hell on the lead...Does Hell Pull ????
Also have now let him off loose for a run twice in a filed, and that went well too...So its just now teaching him with the trains. He doesn`t dig up the garden which is good, but does pee on plants, which i don`t expect is going to help them...
                          2 Pics attatched,
                        All the best,
                        Ade

He looks a sweetie.  The dog pee doesn't seem to do any damage to plants but finding a hidden treasure under you shoe whilst you're concentrating on the trains is a bummer!

Definatly some Beagle in the mix. Look at the eyes.... So you're entering the Iditerod? Roll On Floor Laughing The best way to train a dog to walk on a leash without pulling is thus. Take dog on leash for walkies the instant it starts pulling stop! when the lead goes slack move off as soon as the pressure comes back on stop... Ok depending on the intelligence of the dog this can take days or minutes but sooner or later the dog will get the hint that it can walk if the leash is loose. It may take time and patience but it will work...
                              Great looking hound....

We never had dogs, we had kids instead, and I don't believe healthwise that dogs and kids go together, my pre-NHS family doc always used to say that. I used to work with a guy who maintained dogs? dogs are for kickin'. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
