Railcar looks ace.  Perfect for night running I'd say

Lovely! I hope to add lights to my railcar too! I've got a trailer car in the same red colour I'm not using. I'd be happy to sell it on to help fund other project this year, send me a PM if you're interested

I keep telling you, smaller aperture, longer exposer.  Reciprocity failure eeeek.

Re:SJ Running today - 12/01/12 02:35 PM
Problem with slow speed in low light is that you are up against the noise creation of the sensor. A smaller aperture gives good depth of focus but also brings the problem again of even less light getting to the sensor. Then what happens is that any light source (such as the lights in a coach or building or loco headlights etc will burn out or maybe 'flare' in the lens.
Of course if you have a really good DSLR or even a high end compact with manual controls, then these issues can be overcome together with a little work in Photoshop.

Having said that I think the photos look very good Steve...nicely atmospheric....nice one!

Very atmospheric, and showing admirable determination as a superior of mine once should have written.... of course down in this part of the world the atmosphere is at about 35 degrees;  I should be doing major civil engineering but in the current temperatures it's just a little bit much (not to mention the skin cancer risk) so cruising the web - and came on ice on the roof.  Refreshing!
