Re:A bit more about RJR (newbie) - 10/04/10 09:21 PM
Although its not been mentioned much in the thread I do have a more traditional "in the garden" g scale railway too.

What can I say, the weather was far to nice to be in the shed playing trains, especially when you have the option to play trains in the sunshine After cutting the lawn and having a good tidy up in the garden, attention turned to the railway and in particular how it had faired over the extreme winter weather. I am happy to report that bar a few minor bits of the concrete ballasting cracking no major rework has been required. I have chipped a few of the looser sections away and backfilled with new, but an hour of maintenance after a winter is really no more work than a standard OO layout. One of my two indoor layout purchases, made on ebay this week arrived today, and was given a test in the garden, Im quite pleased with the level of detail on the mini digger for £5.50

of course pointing man is never far away,

Here is a step back, track plan kind of shot,

It looks quite small in a single shot but you can get an idea of scale from the 6'wide fence panels in the background. After a bit of "testing" I had a rummage to see what track I had left in the shed and decided to start the planned extension.

The point work just in front of where the loco is sat, has been there since the track was first laid, today the spur leading of it has been added.

This resulted in the need for a bit more testing

Fortunately as Mrs RJR was out this afternoon the extension went unnoticed, even when she came out on her return Its called claiming the garden by stealth. My plan now involves track on an even cheaper scale than the playmo .... It occured to me that when I sit stock on the shed step, the deck boards have a pair of grooves 45mm wide

So the plan is to lay a single board along the back of the path from where the new extension now ends, right down the garden.

Of course I wont need planning permission for this from the domestic authorities as it isn't new track laying, it a gravel board to stop the stones behind it coming onto the path Genius me thinks !!!!! John

John nothing suprises me with this thread and your ideas and im sure you have thought about it if not il let you claim it but if you were to paint the decking silver then with thin lining tape mask where the rail would be and paint it brown (bear with me) place some track on top and spray the board dark grey then splater light gray on top to simulate gravel remove track and see what it looks like. i suggest if anyone of us did it it would look silly but with you !!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the comments!! Watch this space with the decking ... I like your idea Tony, I have also thought about pairing the un-required upstands off with a chisel to leave just the 2 rails..

On another subject.

I know not everyone likes blogs, I have to say I have grown to like the format and find it a good way to "post" updates when normal threads are specific to layout or gauge. For some time now I have been blogging within the RMweb site and am suprised to say I have had quite reasonable size following given I don't do very popular scales in the main. I do maintain a website for RJR but find it can be either quite "static" or needs a lot of updating to remain current. So for the past few days I have been playing with a Blogger account to see how flexible it is and have got to a point that I can say "Hey I have a Blogger account, come see" I didn't want to do so, until there was at least something to look at !!! So if you have a spare couple of minutes, pop in, better still if you a regular reader of my ramblings, I mean posts !! bookmark the blog or sign up to follow. Blog it bobg !

Not been here for a while as I have been working on an N gauge layout but today I have been in the garden

Due to the impending arrival of a new trampoline for my daughters I have had to make some compromises in the garden. The main result is flattening the rockery, removing and moving the return loop that was at the bottom of the garden. Of course to them it may seem as though I lost the battle that was being mediated by the domestic planning authority, of course, it was a tactical loss, I may well have lost the battle but when you see how much further away the return loop is... I think I may well have won the War

The red circle is the outline of the trampoline

Thanks for the encouragement RJR, I'll think about it. At the moment my impotence......... errr sorry!, impetous is to get the rail down, but I'm trying to keep a good photo record of all that's going on, so I could share it later.  I have an unusual feature in the garden which has made life hard.

I was wondering about that sound card. How would you rate it? and how hard is it to install?

Re:A bit more about RJR (newbie) - 27/05/10 05:56 PM
Its been a while since I did any soldering on circuit boards ! I guess that's the big downside as it is a kit and therefore you have to solder all the components on yourself. It is very simple to follow the instructions, just a case of "solder by numbers"

Once soldered up it worked first time. There is a sliding on/off switch on the circuit board but I added a small toggle switch into the battery wire that I mounted in the back of the tender.

The other controls are a pair of variable resistors, one for chuff speed, one for volume. The sound is not programmable beyond that, as in it generates one loco sound only. The horn is not of any use as it sounds more like a bleep.

Its quite a big circuit board so won't fit in a little loco !

and comes with a 50mm diameter speaker. I made a back box for the speaker and it is mounted behind the circuit board facing down.

Although the volume seems low on the video it is about right in the flesh.

I too had looked at this previously, but could see no way of synchronizing the chuff to a variable motor speed. Having recently wired this loco to be just on or off to leave running round a continuous loop the variable speed is no longer a problem, I have just tweaked the card to be something like the speed the loco runs at.

For £7.99 I think it is cracking value and good enough for people that just want to add the element of sound to a loco. It isn't specific to a garratt and not suitable for someone looking for an authentic sound. But at the price I could add a second one at the coal bunker end to simulate pistons at both ends

All in I think it was a good investment

This seems very tempting indeed, Any chance of a link to see where we could "research " the product.

Also do you reckon that it would be possible to fit into a playmobil tank loco?

Link to maplins online store page, they show non in stock but they may have them in your local store.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=31695
I think you would squeeze one into the boiler of the small tank but I haven't tried, I do have such a loco and will have a measure tomorrow, to be fair though at £8.00 it wouldn't be a big loss, you could always put it in a wagon behind the loco if all else failed, you could then use it behind different locos

As predicted the day the track arrived (Saturday) it rained most of the day ! But it was a bit brighter Sunday afternoon, if not warm ! But I braved the elements and got it laid.

As you say, great value. I have one - baseboard mounted - for my trailer layout to provide background sound.
