The Weather AGAIN
23/07/10 12:40 PM
( permalink)
This seems t be a regular SUMMER topic, but once again the weather appears to have forgotton its summer and is causing a serious re think of future developments.....at least with me that is!! I am in the middle of a line redevelopment, but progress has now been effectively halted by the more or less constant rain we seem to be getting, The local Airport down the road had 68 mm in 18 hrs on Weds. and that doesnt help the state of the track bed!! I am seriously thinking if it is really worth pursuing an outdoor line as before we know it the 'Summer' will have ended. Maybe I will have a sale and invest in more 'indoor' model railway equipment!!

Steve, With a line that's just been completed 2' 6" clear of the ground and a not dissimilar amount of rainfall in the last 24hrs, I was surprised to see this morning the amount of dirt thrown up on the buildings I've 'planted' purely as a result of rain splash over a limited area. This is real weathering, fair enough, but at 1:1 scale and impact on 1:20 scale material. Off outside again now between showers..... Alec K

The weather round our way seems to have been slightly better than last year up to now, but I know what you mean Steve. After the disasterous "Summer" we had last year, I seriously considered moving to an indoor layout.

(Although we seem to have a lot of breweries here?) We had our first rain in weeks only yesterday, for about 20 minutes. Not enough to green up the grass....

Our grass has got some well needed rain in the last week or so- all of it was brown dead... I hate to say it but north Wales isn't really known for it's clement weather! I lived in Aberystwyth for a while- and there really is a huge difference in climate to the SE!

I really do know what you mean about the weather but I have it in reverse! it's so damn hot I can't stay out to play for too long! I have to retreat to the shed for a cold beverage and a cool down......................It's expected to be up in the low to mid 80's through next week and if it wasn't for the morning fog and overcast it would be unbearable, and rain? not for a couple of month's yet....................

I've got to be honest Steve, I don't know about where you live but May and June were by the whole pretty good here, in the midlands, I've got a lot done on the railway. Perhaps "Summer" as we know it July and august are not great, but we tend to get other good months not normally associated with nice weather. September and May are becoming the better months for the garden even if the days are a little shorter, its a good excuse to have lighting on a layout.

WE had a wet, wet (and cold, very cold) winter, a very dry spring and now we are getting all that we missed earlier plus a deposit for the coming autumn and winter. I never fill the pond on my line and very rarely need to take water to our goats - all is done by the generous hand of nature. Any yes, Wed was absolutely bloomin wet! Mick

I lived in Aberystwyth for a while- and there really is a huge difference in climate to the SE! I dont know about the weather here actually being any worse than other places!!. we moved here from Disley Cheshire ( Just South of Manchester) in '84 and the weather here did seem to be an improvement on there, I remember that we had some really hot summers in the 80s & 90s with all the turf completey burnt off and serious water shortages & defimnately no hospipes, But moving to out present address almost 4 years ago ( only 1/2 mile from other house) we don't seem to have any sort of what we might call a summer like we used to have!. Talking of Aberystwyth, I used to go trhere work wise for a few years once every 4 weeks and i have to agree that the weather alsways seemed, bad there nearly always raining

Chris M Don't change your hobby - move to a better climate! Absolutely, we are very short of rain in these parts, the trouble is the sun gets too hot. You can’t win.

Whay not get one of those big party tents or something and put it over the layout. It will keep things dry.
