Its a long story, but I've been given access to hundreds of scanned slides of 60's steam. Three of us spent the evening trying to identify the locations, but we need some help. These two should be identifiable, but I can't be sure if the shed image is the right way round. Any ideas ? { Burnham-on-Sea, S&DJR } { Definitely Bedford }

The first one gives the impression of being near the coast but it's a pure guess really.

LMS territory? I'd try posting on rmweb.com they have a prototype questions section - I'm guessing they'd get and answer really fast!

Not sure but i think the second one might be Bedford. There was a shed there that looked something like that... The remains of the shed can still be seen on google.

The first one is Burnham-on-Sea at the end of the S&D branch line.

dutchelm Burnham-on-Sea at the end of the S&D branch line. Yes, I would agree with Mike, No 1 is Burnham-on-Sea.

Thanks guys. Keith, I'll share as many as I reasoanbly can. The slides belong to a Blackpool group, who were given the collection years ago. We waded through them and there was the usual mish mash of enthusiasts stuff. Martin, the current Chairman of the group, thought it was a shame that they probably wouldn't be seen again, so arranged to have some of the steam ones scanned at his own expense out of respect for the original, anonymous, photographer. When we looked at the results it was clear that the collection included some copies and some proprietary images, but mainly the last few years of steam in NW England. I thought a lot of you would appreciate sight of these images, but I am also mindful that they aren't mine, and once they're on the internet, they enter the public domain. Martin agreed that I could share a selection of images where we could not determine a location for starters. So, not to leave Chugsy out : { Masbury S&DJR - back to front } I know, I know, but if I correct it and somone reads this thread..... { Wimbledon } { Brackley Central }

My thoughts would have been S&DJR, and so Burnham woiuld have been a likely guess. That end building and the lack of a horizon certainly suggested a seaside view.

The Standard Class 4MT 2-6-4T in the middle picture is Wimbledon, the corner of B Box can just be seen to the left hand edge of the photo.

The pic 'possibly Bedford'......is most likely just that. The large building is I believe Allens Tower of Allens Enginneering.......now demolished? The brick arch bridge is Queens Park Overbridge, the new station would be just out of shot to the right.

I THINK this might be Masbury on the Somerset & Dorset, between Midsomer Norton and Shepton Mallet. If it is, then why is the train running wrong road?

I think this is Masbury but I'm wondering if the image is back to front as well. I'm comparing it with a photo from almost the same position in Judge and Potts Illustrated survey of the S&D which has the box and stn buildings on the right hand side when looking towards Shepton Mallet - that's the opposite way round to this image Nigel

As shown it is Express Meat or Fish. Reversed it would be Express General Goods! However, the Southern region was a bit of a law unto itself and they might have a different meaning.

Almost certainly Masbury, back to front. Taken from the road bridge. There is a good picture in Historical Survey of the Stations of S & D with the track layout.

Yes, the picture is definately reversed, if nothing else the signals give it away. This way round the headcode is also correct for a passenger train as the S&D retained its own unique configuration of lamps and SR discs.

Thanks for that one guys. The scan shop did their best, but a few were still AAF, which dosen't help if you don't know where they are. We are just left with slide 3 from post 8 - any ideas ? A few more - the first one I do know, and its probably a copy, but Netty will appreciate it. { Garstang & Catterall } { Stockport Edgeley ? }

Dtsteam A few more - the first one I do know, and its probably a copy, but Netty will appreciate it. The bottom picture is the south end of Stockport Edgeley station, isn't it? Certainly somewhere on the first phase of Manchester-London electrification given the isolators in the overhead.
