My big Baldwin has arrived 27/08/10 08:15 PM (permalink)

Hi For quite a long time now I have been waiting for Accucraft in China to start building the promised Denver & South Park Baldwin 2 8 0 locomotives.

Finally they have done it - there are only a limited numbe being made, and mine is in the 1880's (as delivered) colours.

A huge and heavy box arrived this morning, and when opened there were two boxes inside that; the one containing the loco was opened and inside was a large U shaped carrioer for the heavy loco, very well wrapped and secured to the board at the bottom of the carrier. That had to be undone to realease it, and all the tape cut through before it could be seen and admired.

But there was no (huge) Nesmith stack - that was hiding inside the much lighter (but the same size - these loco tenders are virtually the same size as the loco! Long haul tenders indeed.

That was easier to get into, lots of foam and polystyrene but much lighter. The chimmney stack was rertreived from the packing and fiytted in location and the loco was taken outside in to the sunshine for some photo's -  here are some of the results.

First a top view of the loco and tender - these locos were the standard Baldwin narrow gauge freight locos and were sold worldwide.

An 'official'' style photo taken at the end of my trestle of the loco and tender.

Another photo in the next message.

    Lovely! (drool...)
    Is she a C16?

Yes but that is the Denver & Rio Grande identification for them, but you are correct.

It has been a long wait (at least it gave me time to save up!) for it but John was very helpful and kept me informed.

Great looking loco Peter. Did you get it this side of the pond? I am hoping to acquire an Accucraft Shay shortly.

        Hi

        A final photo

Shown against some of the garden greenery, and with my scratch built Way car (guards cvan) in tow.

I had the loco on my rolling road without its tender and nothing happened - a quick check showed that all was OK in the power, so I attached the tender and it starred moving; the loco has some contacts but it seems that the are for the Chuff trigger and headlight  only.

The tender also  has a seies of holes (just over 2.5 inches daimeter) for a loudspeaker.

        Meanwhile it needs running in.

            Hi,
Yes, it was ordered from John Boyes on the Isle of Man - his service is superb amd he actually managed a reduction in the expected price - he should have a photo of my new loco on his site soon.

Give him a call, or e-mail, he is very helpful; the loco will come direct from Accucraft UK (in Shropshire) by carrier, Joh is paid (free delivery) and Accucraft do the rest..

I'm trying to decide what I like the most, the loco or Peter's trestle bridge. (Ok so I'm a bit of a civil engineering gricer on the quiet!)

Now then, as the Isle of Man happens to have a 3 foot narrow gauge railway I wonder what locos they could have purchased from America to solve the motive powers shortages in the 1960's ?

              Happy steamings,

              John
