The box van is an LGB 40075 - this one was out of a Stainz starter set in grey with AL21 on the side until I weathered it. Thanks Paul, I like the look of it and think one would fit with my other stock. I'll have to keep a look out for one

This appears to be the most difficult gradient on my layout. If the train climbs this without wheel slip, it will manage all the mountain line.

Paul: I love seeing your pictures! You may have posted this before, but what are the gradients on your line? Which is the steepest and how long is it? Have you had to ensure that all your curves - particularly your 180 degree turns - are completely flat between gradients, or are there also curves which are on gradients? What radius are they? I am reconstructing my railway and have only space for 1 in 20 over 10 metres, with a slight S (radius 3) about half way along. I had a much shorter steeper gradient on which even my Corpets struggled with more than four LGB coaches - vans are of course lighter so trains could be longer. Phil

Phil Thanks Phil The gradients up the mountain line vary: The steepest section is at the top, which is straight at around 1 in 20 for about a metre. The two 180 degree corners are R1 and the gradient is much shallower at around 1 in 40. The remaining straights are at around 1 in 30 A Rugens 0-8-0 loco will haul 15 wagons up the mountain line when the rails are dry. A U Class 0-6-2 will haul 4 bogie coaches up the mountain line (but no more than that). The U43 U Class is the best hauler of the 0-6-2 s

I tend not to overdo the size of the trains up the mountain line. No need to put undue strain on the gearboxes. Duncan the live steamie can haul six four wheeled carriages up the mountain.

Thanks Paul: I should be ok then...dry track does make a difference - dew is a more subtle enemy than rain (because you know when it's raining, but you can't always tell when your track was cold enough to get dew on it...) Phil

Phil Yes indeed Phil - worse still if a live steamie was running on the track the day before......

My Saxon Meyer's performance on the gradients improved considerably once I had sparingly oiled the pick up skates so they ran up and down smoothly.
