This is probably the longest train that I've run on my railway, which had most of the wagons I owned at the time in its consist.

I've obtained a few more trucks since then, but most of my trains are 5 wagons long, as the sidings at Weybourne, where the train is just passing, are only just long enough for trains of those lengths, and space preculdes me from making them any longer....

The narrow gauge didn't automatically mean short trains. Indeed as the wagons were often small a fair few were needed to make a decent payload.

In the trials of 1869/70 it was shown to be capable of hauling trains more than twice as heavy as the England engines. The details of two runs are recorded here;
The first train in September 1869 consisted of 111 slate wagons, 6 carriages, 60 passengers and 12 goods wagons. This weighed 133tons and was 1348ft in length. The train was divided at Hafod-y-llyn in case the loco stalled in Moelwyn Tunnel. With the remainder of the train, however, Little Wonder went through the tunnel at 23mph. On the return journey a speed of 35mph was recorded.
In July 1870 it hauled a train of 75 loaded slate wagons and 8 unloaded totalling 210tons approx from the Cob to Gwyndy Bank, where it was shown capable of restarting the train on the gradient. The loco averaged 13mph on the first part of the test.

Well I've loved this thread! As the originator I am going to make Mike's freight passing over itself my winner- that is some proper tractive effort going on. But I also love those LGB of al kinds effortlessly pulling long trains like Keith just a few up from here.

I am certainly going to try and take a more brunelian approach to the next phase to allow this kind of stuff- all brilliant.

And yb281 love your layout so cool. I would love to see if you could get a chase its tale video clip.

Was the Jack pulls all caught on vid?

This is not the longest I have run just the longest I have a photo of.
They are mostly lightweight wagons.
The longest has been 88 axles on several occasions. The track is level.

I am amused to see the modern intermodal behind the 0-6-0T. How I envy all you guys with the railways up and running. More than 3 years ago I bought a concrete mixer after chatting to Keith. It still has not done a mix. I was posted almost as soon as I got it.

Still one day! and boy when I can do it I will give you a long train!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! could be another 8 years yet! but have I got the stock and the engines!

It is really very encouraging for those of us without anything permanent to see you other guys beautiful railways/railroads. I have bought a load of track from Ash for a portable layout which I have finally started after about 4 years (kept promising Glyn G Scale Sussex). I have loads of LGB track I was going to lose but cant bear to part with after all...................

Please keep posting as many pics as you can, especially when I do not have to open them.

Keith have you got a class 66 like the ones we have down the bottom by Beachborough?
